31+ Transcription Jobs in Canada: Which Companies Hire Canadians?
As a Canadian looking for work-from-home transcription jobs, it can be frustrating: It seems like all the transcription companies are located in the U.S.!
However, if you dig a bit deeper, you’ll find that there are some good online transcription jobs just for us Canucks. Many Canadian transcription companies are small businesses that offer lesser-known and higher-paying opportunities than you’ll find on most generic “transcription jobs” lists.
Update March 7, 2024: I’m looking for part-time overflow help with academic interview transcription starting in April. Must be based in Canada or the US, have work references, flexible availability (including weekends), and be very responsive to emails. Must be able to turn around 90 minutes of 2-3 speaker audio in three days. Email chloe [at] opaltranscriptionservices.com with your experience and availability (please also add my email to your approved senders). IMPORTANT: Please paste your resume into the body of your email instead of sending it as an attachment or I will not be able to read it. More info: https://www.mondayroadmap.com/transcription-jobs/
So for this post, I’ve compiled a list of 31 (and counting) Canadian transcription companies that hire independent contractors for general and legal transcription work. If you’re interested in training as a general or legal transcriptionist, I recommend the Transcribe Anywhere online transcription training, which is AAERT-approved.
Some of the following companies also hire for captioning, subtitling, translation, proofreading, data entry, and other remote freelance positions. (For more information about the many online job opportunities that are available besides transcription, see my recent post.)
Note that all the companies I’ve included in this particular list are Canada based. There are also companies outside of Canada that hire Canadians: Check out my list of 75+ freelance transcription jobs and do a Ctrl + F and search for the keyword “Canada,” “worldwide,” or “international” to find them.
Also keep in mind that although some companies advertise as hiring in the U.S., sometimes they’re open to taking on qualified Canadian applicants. So when in doubt, you can try your luck by sending an email to ask.

What you’ll need to work for Canadian transcription companies
If you’re just getting started in transcription, I recommend the following equipment:
- Transcription software. You can get professional transcribing software for free here.
- Foot pedal. I like the Infinity USB pedal because it’s compatible with most of the software that transcription companies use.
- Transcription headset. The Spectra USB headset with volume control is one of the most popular headsets among professional transcriptionists.
- The latest version of Microsoft Word. By subscribing to Office 365, you can save all your work online and you’ll always have the latest version of Microsoft Word and other Office products.
You can save a lot of money on equipment by purchasing a transcription bundle that includes Express Scribe software, an Infinity pedal, and a Spectra headset.

Hello, I am so grateful that I came across this article. I am researching information to send to a Manitoba government department to receive a grant for a transcription course and my monthly living expenses while I take the course. The course I felt was the best one I found is from Transcribe Anywhere, and that is the one that you recommend in this article. But I am not sure that the department I am sending this information to will be receptive; the consultant I am in contact with seems to be more receptive to Canadian schools and/or courses than one that is from the U.S. I haven’t found any Canadian schools or courses that were legitimate or worth the money invested. Did you take your transcription courses with Transcribe Anywhere, or did you find a respectable, legitimate Canadian course? I would really appreciate your input. Thank you.
Hi Simone!
I actually got into general and legal transcription as a result of my training and work experience as a medical transcriptionist. I received my certificate with CanScribe (the Canadian version of the Career Step program).
That said, later on I did purchase the Transcribe Anywhere legal transcription course as I began to acquire more US-based clients. I recommend this course for anyone looking to learn the ropes of legal transcription — especially for US clients, although much of it can be applied to Canadian legal transcription as well.
If you’re looking for a Canadian legal transcription course, you could look into Verbatim Studies (link here). I do not have personal experience with this course so I can’t comment on it from that angle, but from what I understand, they provide legal transcription training as well as ACT certification, which is required to transcribe in-court proceedings for Ontario clients.
A certificate isn’t always required to do legal transcription (except in some cases, like the ACT certification in Ontario), although it would be challenging to hop into legal transcription without having trained first.
I hope this helps!
